- Rep. Carrie Lewis DelRosso (R-Allegheny/Westmoreland) issued the following statement regarding GenOn Holdings, LLC announcement to retire three coal-fired power plants, including Cheswick Generating Station which is located in the 33rd Legislative District:
“I recently visited the GenOn Holdings, LLC power plant and was quite impressed by their operations. It was my understanding that they were faced with some difficult decisions based on the Regional Greenhouse Gas Imitative (RGGI), initiated by Gov. Tom Wolf. It is heartbreaking to learn that this plant will be closed as of Sept. 15, and 56 employees will lose their jobs.
“The Cheswick plant is one of only four of this type of power plant left in the state, and it is an honor to have this energy-efficient labor located in my district. The plant invested hundreds of millions of dollars to provide anti-pollution measures, and it is extremely thermal efficient. The decision to close is due to unfavorable economic conditions, higher costs, inability to compete with other generation types and evolving market rules that promote subsidized resources.
“Western Pennsylvania needs more jobs and money to invest in our infrastructure. We need to keep our energy jobs in the state, and this closure does nothing but ruin our economy further and steal family-sustaining jobs from our citizens. It is disheartening news for Springdale and Allegheny County, but I promise to use my energy and business background to initiate and support any efforts with GenOn to work on new development or new business which will continue to supply infrastructure funding for Allegheny.”
